Explore Financing OptionsA commercial EV charging station takes electricity from the power grid and delivers it to an electric vehicle parked at a commercial or municipal property such as a workplace, retail store, or public garage. A commercial EV charging project typically leverages a combination of Level 2 EV chargers and Level 3 / DC Fast Chargers (DCFC).
Level 2 EV charging stations pull alternating current (AC) electricity from the electric grid and deliver it to an EV, where it is converted into direct current (DC) and stored in the vehicle's battery. DC Fast Chargers convert AC electricity to DC inside the charger itself before delivering it to the vehicle.
EV charging stations come with a long list of benefits for corporations, retail locations, multi-unit buildings, and many other types of entities. Providing convenient EV charging satisfies the demands of employees, customers, and tenants who drive electric vehicles, which can result in better business outcomes. EV charging stations are also highly visible symbols of your commitment to sustainability and help your business reduce its carbon footprint.
Commercial EV charging installations utilize Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers. Which kind of charger you choose to go with (if not a combination of both) depends a lot on property type and driver behavior.
For example, a workplace where employees remain parked throughout the day is a good candidate for Level 2 chargers, but a retail store where customers make short pit stops is better suited for DC Fast Chargers that have quicker charging speeds.
Chargers also differ in terms of the types of connectors they use. Level 2 chargers use a J1772 plug (or “J-plug”) while DC Fast Chargers commonly use the Combined Charging System (CCS), which is also compatible with Level 2 and Level 1.
A knowledgeable EV charging solutions provider like PowerFlex can advise you on which chargers make the most sense for you.
Level 2 electric vehicle chargers typically provide about 40 miles of electric range per hour, depending on the charger and the EV’s battery capacity. DC Fast Chargers can provide around 200 miles of electric range per hour of charging, and some ultra-fast DCFCs can deliver even higher rates.
In addition to adequate parking lot space, the biggest requirement for installing commercial EV charging stations is having enough power capacity on site to meet the demands of daily charging. Other requirements include applying for permits and ensuring the installation complies with all local regulations. As your EV solutions provider, PowerFlex will assess your site and plan an EV charging installation that accommodates the specific needs of your business.
The first step to a successful and cost-effective EV charging installation is partnering with a solutions provider like PowerFlex that can handle every stage of the project lifecycle. From there, your provider should conduct a thorough site assessment to determine your onsite charging needs, develop the project plans (including identifying and applying for money-saving incentives), and finally, procure and install the charging equipment. Many factors affect the final cost of commercial EV charging stations. These include, but are not limited to, site conditions, the number of EVs you anticipate will charge on your property, the facility’s power capacity, and the types of charging stations you will be installing. Importantly, there are a wealth of incentives available across the U.S. that offset the cost of EV charging projects, in addition to monetization opportunities via driver fees.
The lifespan of EV charging station depends greatly on how often it's used, maintenance schedules, and other factors. But generally speaking, an EV charging station can remain in operation for as long as a decade.
Proactive operations and maintenance (O&M) ensures the effectiveness and longevity of your EV charging stations. This may include monitoring and optimizing charging, managing warranties and ongoing incentives, providing customer support, and dispatching a service team when needed. PowerFlex EV charging solutions span the entire EV project lifecycle, including these critical O&M services.
As more of your employees, customers, or tenants adopt electric vehicles, you’ll need to consider expanding your existing EV charging capacity — which could require expensive infrastructure upgrades if your charging demand isn’t managed effectively. PowerFlex solves this problem with our energy management platform PowerFlex X™. It leverages patented Adaptive Load Management® algorithms to intelligently distribute demand, allowing you to scale the number of chargers on your property without significant electrical upgrades.
